Work this list in order. It is sorted by how often each fault turns out to be the culprit on a real service call, and the first three cost nothing to check.

Before anything else, note what the furnace does when you raise the thermostat. Silence, a click with no blower, a blower that runs cold, or a unit that lights and quits after five seconds are four different problems — and that detail alone narrows this list to one or two causes.

Is the thermostat actually calling for heat?

Cause 01 COMMON DIY-friendly

More no-heat calls end at the thermostat than at the furnace. Check four things in this order:

  • Mode and setpoint. The mode must read HEAT, not AUTO-changeover, not COOL, and the setpoint must be at least 3°F above the current room temperature. A thermostat sitting one degree above room temp may simply not be calling yet.
  • Batteries. A battery-powered thermostat with a lit screen can still be too weak to close the relay. If the display is dim, the backlight is slow, or the unit has been in place more than a year, replace the batteries before you do anything else.
  • The breaker for the thermostat’s C-wire. Smart thermostats that steal power from the control transformer will drop offline when the furnace loses power — which makes a power problem look like a thermostat problem.
  • A tripped schedule or hold. Programmable and smart thermostats routinely get left in an eco or away hold after a vacation.

If you want to rule the thermostat out entirely, pull it off the wall plate and touch the R and W wires together for two seconds. If the furnace fires, the thermostat is your fault and the furnace is fine. If nothing happens, move on.

Has the furnace lost power?

Cause 02 COMMON DIY-friendly

A furnace has more than one thing that can cut its power, and homeowners usually only check one of them.

The breaker. Find the furnace circuit in your panel. A tripped breaker often does not look tripped — it can sit in a middle position that reads as “on” at a glance. Push it fully to OFF, then back to ON.

The service switch. There is a switch that looks exactly like a light switch on the furnace itself or on the wall beside it, often at the top of the basement stairs. Painters, movers, and anyone hunting for a basement light flip it constantly.

The blower door switch. A plunger switch in the blower compartment kills all power when the panel is off. If the door was removed for a filter change and not seated squarely, the furnace is dead by design. Press the door firmly and re-latch it.

The condensate safety switch. High-efficiency furnaces drain acidic condensate through a trap and pump. When that line clogs or the pump fails, a float switch shuts the furnace down before water backs up into it. A full drain pan under the unit is the tell. Clear the line and the furnace usually starts on its own.

If the breaker trips again the moment you reset it, stop there. That is a short, and it is an electrician or HVAC tech’s job, not yours.

Is gas actually reaching the furnace?

Cause 03 OCCASIONAL DIY-friendly

The manual shutoff valve on the gas line into the furnace should have its handle parallel to the pipe. Perpendicular means closed. Valves get closed during appliance work, water heater replacements, and remodels, then forgotten.

Then check another gas appliance. If your gas range will not light either, the problem is upstream of the furnace: a utility outage, an unpaid account, or a tripped excess-flow valve at the meter. Call the utility, not a contractor.

If your furnace ran on propane and the tank gauge reads under 15%, you may be out of usable pressure even though the gauge is not on zero.

Is the ignitor dead?

Every furnace built since the mid-1980s lights with either a hot-surface ignitor — a small carbide element that glows orange — or an intermittent spark. The hot-surface type is the single most common failed part in residential heating, and it fails on a predictable schedule: roughly 3 to 7 years, sooner in a furnace that short-cycles.

The symptom is specific. You hear the draft inducer spin up, you hear the click of the gas valve trying, and then the whole sequence resets. Repeat three times and the board goes into lockout. With the blower panel off and a flashlight, you should see the ignitor glow bright orange about 20 seconds into the cycle. No glow means no ignition.

Ignitors are cheap parts — $25 to $60 — but they are brittle silicon carbide, they sit inside the burner assembly, and the mounting bracket and wiring harness vary by model. Skin oil from bare fingers shortens the life of a new one. This is where the DIY line usually falls: budget $150 to $300 installed and let a tech match the part number.

Is the flame sensor dirty?

Cause 05 COMMON DIY-friendly

If your furnace lights, burns for three to seven seconds, then shuts the gas off and blows cold, that is the flame sensor almost every time.

The sensor is a thin metal rod sitting in the burner flame. It does not sense heat — it passes a tiny current through the flame itself, on the order of 2 to 6 microamps. When a film of silica and carbon builds up on the rod, that current drops below the board’s threshold, the board concludes there is no flame, and it closes the gas valve. That shutdown is the safety system working correctly.

The fix is genuinely simple: power off at the service switch, pull the sensor’s single mounting screw, slide the rod out, and scuff the metal with a fine abrasive pad, a dollar bill, or fine steel wool. Do not use sandpaper coarser than about 400 grit — it scores the rod and speeds up the next fouling. Reinstall, restore power, and the furnace should hold flame.

If cleaning buys you two weeks and the fault returns, replace the sensor. If a new sensor still drops out, the problem is grounding or the board, not the sensor.

Has the control board failed?

Cause 06 RARE Call a pro

The integrated furnace control board runs the sequence: inducer, pressure switch proof, ignitor warm-up, gas valve, flame proof, blower. When it fails, the furnace can be completely dead, stuck at one step, or intermittent in ways that make no sense — working fine in the evening and dead at 6 a.m.

Almost every board has a diagnostic LED behind the blower door, and a legend printed on the inside of the panel translating flash codes. Read the code before anyone quotes you a part. Three flashes on one manufacturer means an open pressure switch; on another it means a limit fault. That code is the difference between a $30 part and a $600 one.

Boards themselves run $400 to $700 installed. Before you approve that on a furnace over 15 years old, get a replacement quote for comparison — a board on a 20-year-old 80% unit is money spent on a machine already past its service life.

Is the blower motor or its capacitor gone?

Cause 07 OCCASIONAL Call a pro

If the furnace lights and burns but no air ever moves — or if you hear a hum from the blower compartment without rotation — suspect the run capacitor first and the motor second. A weak capacitor cannot get a PSC motor turning; the motor draws locked-rotor current, heats up, and trips its internal thermal overload. The furnace then hits its high-limit switch, shuts the burners off, and locks out.

Capacitors are $150 to $250 installed and store a dangerous charge even with the power off. A blower motor replacement runs $450 to $900 depending on whether it is a standard PSC or an ECM variable-speed unit.

What a normal startup should sound like

Knowing the healthy sequence tells you where yours is stopping:

  1. Thermostat calls. A relay clicks.
  2. The draft inducer spins up — a rising whine, 20 to 60 seconds.
  3. The pressure switch closes with an audible snap.
  4. The ignitor warms for 15 to 45 seconds.
  5. The gas valve clicks open and the burners light with a soft whoosh.
  6. The flame is proved within about 5 seconds.
  7. The blower starts 30 to 60 seconds later, once the heat exchanger is warm.
